Looking to learn an easy, meditative way to repair your clothes while making them even more beautiful — and support a good cause while you do it?
Join us at Double Take’s Upcycling Studio for a hands-on Sashiko mending workshop, where 100% of proceeds go to Yonge Street Mission (YSM) to support individuals and families facing poverty in Toronto.
Sashiko mending — a traditional Japanese stitching technique that transforms wear and tear into one-of-a-kind designs. Rooted in sustainability and creativity, Sashiko (which means "little stabs") was originally used to reinforce worn garments and extend their lifespan. Today, it's a cherished form of visible mending that celebrates imperfection and mindful making.
At Double Take Thrift Store’s Upcycling Studio, we believe in the power of reuse, remake, and renew — and Sashiko is a perfect expression of that ethos.
Whether you're new to sewing or just curious about creative ways to extend the life of your clothes, this beginner-friendly workshop is for you. You'll learn how to:
-
Use basic Sashiko stitches to mend small holes or reinforce worn areas
-
Choose patterns and thread colors that suit your personal style
-
Embrace imperfection as part of the design
-
Turn old or damaged clothing into artful, wearable pieces
We’re hosting two in-person Sashiko Mending Workshops at our Upcycling Studio (310 Gerrard Street East, Toronto):
-
Saturday, May 24th | 1–3 PM
Reserve Your Spot - May 24, 2025 -
Thursday, May 29th | 6–8 PM
Reserve Your Spot - May 29, 2025
No experience needed — all materials and tools will be provided. Just bring an item of clothing you’d like to mend or embellish, or choose one from our collection of donated garments.
By joining our workshop, you're not just learning a new skill — you're supporting a circular fashion economy and giving back to the community. All proceeds go directly to support Yonge Street Mission (YSM) programs that help individuals facing poverty in Toronto.
